Since its voluntary amalgamation with Herrenberg in 1965, Affstaett has been a district of Herrenberg. The first historical mention of Affstaett occurs in the 13th century, in the year 1287. It celebrated its 70th anniversary in 1987. The history of Affstaett is described in detail in the article "From Affinstaetten to Affstaett" in the Herrenberg Historical Series, Vol.1.
Affstaett is halfway between Herrenberg and Kuppingen and lies in the open plain of the Korngaeu. The margins of the Schoenbuch with its wooded hills is nearby and in the blue distance we can glimpse the hills of the Swabian Alps. The population of Affstaett has more than doubled since 1965 and today it totals 1,650. From time immemorial the population structure was agricultural, but this has changed dramatically in the last 20 to 30 years.
Affstaett has a total area of c.473 ha. It extends from Kuppingen (the Roman way) to the Black Forest estate in the north west. The boundary runs past the sports grounds by the shooting wall, through the Affstaett valley and uphill via the B 14, along by the Laemmleshalde residential area to Castle Hill or the Fichtenberg and then to the Roetelberg as far as the L1194 Nufringen-Kuppingen.
The woods behind Kuppingen towards Wildberg were jointly owned by the parishes of Kuppingen, Oberjesingen and Affstaett until 1814, when the woods, which cover an area of 530 ha., were divided between the three parishes. This is why Affstaett's woodland consists of two exclaves on the boundary of Wildberg-Sulz am Eck. These are the areas of woodland known as "Brand" and "Hummelberg", each with an area of about 40 ha.
The incorporation agreement between the former parish of Affstaett and the town of Herrenberg governs their reciprocal legal relations as well as guaranteeing local autonomy for Affstaett and the preservation of the village way of life. This incorporation agreement has, in some instances with a slight delay, been observed and completely fulfilled. The measures to improve the basic facilities and the infrastructure of Affstaedt have been realised - for example the construction of a primary school, the construction of a multi-purpose hall, the extension of the cemetery, the improvement of the water supply by the construction of a water tank, the redesigning and embellishment of the old village centre including several streets and the establishment of several new residential areas, e.g. "Zaunacker" and "Leinenbrunnen".
Cultural and social life in Affstaett is strongly influenced by clubs and church groups. A sense of community is considered important and is also put into practice. The 700th anniversary in 1987 and in particular the magnificent procession were an expression of this sense of community. A monument to Conrad Weiser was constructed as part of the 700th anniversary celebrations. Conrad Weiser was born on 2 November 1696 in Affstaett. In 1709, the Weiser family emigrated to North America, where Conrad Weiser became a "good father to the Indians". He was involved as a peacemaker at the turning point of the Indian wars.
The administration of Affstaett is the task of the district olffice, which is open daily (from Monday to Wednesday and on Friday from 10 to 12 and on Thursdays from 16.30 to 18.30) so that the citizens of Affstaett can have their concerns and applications dealt with on the spot. There are two representatives of Affstaett in the Herrenberg town council. For the local level, a district advisory committee deals with all important matters concerning the Affstaett district and is consulted on all questions concerning the district.
