Herrenberg, situated on the edge of the Schoenbuch, is the central town in the Gaeu. The Foundation Church with the Bell Museum towers above the town and is the dominant landmark of the former Palatine and Rural District town of Herrenberg.

This church with its Baroque onion tower has become the landmark of the town and of the Gaeu region. Below the Foundation Church we find the historical old town. The market place with the market fountain, the town hall, the numerous half-timbered houses, narrow streets and steps, winding lanes leading to out-of-the way courtyards and a large number of fountains - all this bears witness to a rich and turbulent history.

The first documentary mention of Herrenberg occurs in 1271. In 1751 the town became a district capital and in 1806 a regional capital. There were two great fires in 1466 and 1635 and in each case the town was almost razed to the ground and had to be completely rebuilt. The second great fire, in which 280 houses were destroyed, explains the stylistic unity of the architecture of Herrenberg old town. In 1983 the entire town centre became a listed and protected site. The almost completely preserved historical buildings create the medieval flair that is so characteristic of Herrenberg. There is a historical walk around the town with information boards. A large pedestrian zone with numerous shops contributes to the lively atmosphere.

Exploring, shopping and enjoying good food - these are the three dominant themes in Herrenberg. For those who wish to savour culinary delights... the gastronomic range is wide - from the Swabian "Kuddelmuseum" to international cuisine. As you stroll through the town, you will be strongly tempted to visit one of then cafes or beer gardens.

Herrenberg as the central town of the Gaeu region has offers a wide range of leisure activities, a lively association and club scene as well as a cultural spectrum that includes concerts, theatre and cabaret evenings. The opening of the S-Bahn (the city rail link to Stuttgart) has greatly improved public transport facilities to that city. All in all, Herrenberg is not only a charming medieval town but also the modern "Gaeu" metropolis.
