The Choral Window in St. Josef

Jesus Christ in the glory of the new Jerusalem. The biggest glass window

in St. Josef in the South of Germany.

Whenever it is spoken about a church in the region of Herrenberg you think about the 'foundation church' in the Gaeu with its symbol the onion tower. But also less famous churches in the region have got sacral treasures. This is the case in the St. Josef Church. The international famous painter and creater of art paintings, Mr. Albert Birkle, created a monumental churchwindow. Also in America Mr. Birkle is well known for his creations in glass windows.

A guided tour through  St. Josefs Church can be booked at the cath. Parish: phone: 0 70 32 / 9426-0

The crossroad and the baptistry of  Prof. Albert Birkle in the catholic St. Antonius Church Herrenberg-Kuppingen.

In the year 1958 the St. Antonius Church in Kuppingen was built by the architect Martin Schilling and his son, both from Rottenburg/Neckar. The laying of the foundation stone was in the year 1957.

Already in the year 1933 Martin Schilling and his partner architect Hans Lüdkemaier constructed the St. Josef Church in Herrenberg. Therefore it was obvious to order Prof. Albert Birkle with the artworks of the crossroad and the baptistry. Prof. Albert Birkle, who already produced a particular artwork with his first work 'The Lord in the glory of the empyreal Jerusalem' was not an unknown person to the architect. In the meantime Albert Birkle became international famous as an important windowpane painter and designer of church space interior. In the year 1958 he produced the churchwindow of St. Antonius in the glass painting company 'Derix' in Rottweil.

He created some masterpieces with great theological expressiveness with the crossroad and its 14 glasswindows in the size of 0,70 x 0,90 meters each and the baptistry in the size of 2,70 x 2,00 meters.

More artworks in the church:
Later on, as a resurrection window was not existent, a mosaicked altar was construced in the apse, showing coeval witnesses of beliefs, such as Mother Teresa from Calcutta, Bishop Georg Moser and Dome Helder Camaro, a work of the artist Otto Habel, Leinfelden, implemented by the stonesculptor Paul Dittus, Affstätt.
